Visit Fiji! ~ It’s on my bucket list! ;)

Bula Bula!
At Home on Turtle Island, Fiji
By: Gordon Steere

Imagine waking to an alarm that softly sings “Bula Bula” to you each morning. Everyday during our visit to Turtle Island Resort, our “Bure Mama,” Kini, would ensure we woke to that cheerful sound so we wouldn’t miss whatever excursion we had decided on for the day.

But I am getting ahead of myself – Turtle Island is a 500-acre resort located about 30 minutes by seaplane from Nadi, Fiji’s International airport. Guests on Turtle Island arrive and depart on a daily basis so you are always meeting new people from around the world.

On top of this romantic, idyllic location, what makes Turtle Island stand out among many other tropical destinations around the world is the warmth and friendliness of the Fijian Islanders who serve their guests with an uncompromising desire to make them feel like they are part of their family.

The seaplane flight is the start of your “total island” experience as you soar over deep turquoise water, beautiful coral reefs, and islands with small villages. You touch down in a cove where the movie “The Blue Lagoon” was filmed and, as the seaplane departs, you realize how isolated this island really is. Any anxiety quickly melts away as you are warmly greeted by the Turtle Island staff and escorted to your private bure, one of 14 private cottages along the beach cove.

As we entered, the romance of the bure took our breath away. There, on the king-size canopy bed was a welcome home message in fresh hibiscus and palm leaves. Upon arrival each couple is assigned a Bure Mama. Among her many jobs, she sets out fresh hibiscus each day around your bure, and plans all your special outings while on Turtle Island.

In this eco-friendly place, the bure is constructed using materials from the island with wood floors, an intricate ceiling design and a roof constructed of thatched palm branches. Other bure amenities included an outdoor shower, and our favorite touch – an outdoor day bed. We found ourselves lounging and napping each afternoon as the cool island breeze moved through the palms with colorful parrots serenading each other.

The stay on Turtle Island is all-inclusive and your Bure Mama ensures you never go without your favorite foods or drinks. The wine cellar boats a significant variety of wines and champagnes from around the world.

The Island offers a very flexible dining experience. The common table, where you mingle with the other island guests, is always available for each meal. Or, if you want more alone time, you can choose to have breakfast or lunch on your favorite beach. An intimate dinner can be enjoyed in your bure or on a candle lit pontoon floating in the lagoon. Our romantic dinner on the water was the most intimate and unusual dining venue we have ever experienced!

One of the unique highlights of Turtle Island is the chance to enjoy one of 14 private beaches. Each secluded beach is scheduled to ensure you have the place all to yourself and you can try a different one every day of the week. Each day your Bure Mama asks for your preferences and carefully packs gourmet lunches – our personal favorite was fresh lobster and wine. After lunch a nap in the shaded hammock, with the quiet cadence of the surf, relaxation takes over. Your energy returns just in time to snorkel or hunt for exotic seashells along the beach.

The sunrise horseback ride to Long beach is a “don’t miss.” The horses have a mind of their own as they graze along the path to the beach but the prize is a breathtaking sunrise with a breakfast consisting of mimosas, fresh fruit and muffins. Don’t forget your camera.

World class snorkeling can be found right in the lagoon. The reefs were magnificent and the Fijian guides pointed out rare black coral and giant clams. Fiji is also known for its outstanding scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. Another indulgence they are known for is the four handed lomi lomi massage done in the privacy of your own bure. It melts you to putty.

One of the most endearing parts of Turtle Island is watching what happens when things do not go as planned. One evening, as the staff was preparing to perform a pre-dinner fashion show they realized that the CD for the show had disappeared. Bill, our dining host and one of the most talented people I have ever met, launched into an improvised song and dance accompanied by staff members playing guitar. He grabbed gift shop hats and mannequins and danced around the circle of guests. We did not understand a word he was singing but we didn’t care; we were laughing so hard at his crazy antics, it was the best entertainment of the week. And this gets back to why Turtle Island stands out as a great destination. The staff truly cares about you and they will do whatever it takes to meet your needs and expectations. You grow very close to your Bure Mama and when it is time to board the sea plane and your new friends come to the dock to see you off, I guarantee you will be shedding some tears of appreciation for the wonderful people of Turtle Island. Bula Bula my friends!

Obama on feeding the hungry

As President Obama addressed the state of the economy recently, he acknowledged that many Americans are struggling with hunger and turning to food banks for help. But as those people reach out, he noted, food banks across the country are often unable to keep up with demand.

Spread the word about the growing problem of hunger in America and how Feeding America is there to help. Post one of these videos on your website or social media space, and email the link to your friends and family. (Videos are available on YouTube or can be downloaded. There are web banners available as well)

Together, we can all be a part of President Obama’s vision for change in America. Let’s start by changing the fact the one in eight Americans are struggling with hunger.

The right to protest is a perceived human right arising out of a number of recognized human rights. The right to freedom of assembly can include the right to protest. No human rights instrument or national constitution grants the absolute right to protest. However, protest may be a manifestation of the right to freedom of assembly, the right to freedom of association, and the right to freedom of speech.

reflections on our current state: Pink/Nails of WAR

War” ~ an artistic expression.
NIN/Pink Floyd mashup by DPH:

This is a mashup of Pink Floyd’s Dogs of War and NIN’s Good Soldier and Closer.

The video depicts war. War is gruesome therefore this video is gruesome. I firmly believe that the portrayal of war should not be sanitized. To do so is to create a lie of omission. If we are going to declare war on someone – or a word from the dictionary – we need to know what waging war really means so we can make our best judgments about whether it is truly worth it.

The purpose of this is not to be a shock vid but to offer multiple view points to the same situation.

I’m sure this will eventually get pulled so you can feel free to grab the torrent here – http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4620990

*  B!G BANG  *

In 1946, George Gamow, a Russian-born scientist, proposed that the primeval fireball, the “big bang,” was an intense concentration of pure energy. It was the source of all the matter that now exists in the universe. The theory predicts that all the galaxies in the universe should be rushing away from each other at high speeds as a result of that initial big bang. A dictionary definition of the hot big bang theory is “the entire physical universe, all the matter and energy and even the four dimensions of time and space, burst forth from a state of infinite or near infinite density, temperature, and pressure.”

The genius Albert Einstein also pondered the big bang theory, along with many others. His reaction to the consequences of his own general theory of relativity appears to acknowledge the threat of an encounter with God. Through the equations of general relativity, we can trace the origin of the universe backward in time to some sort of a beginning. However, before publishing his cosmological inferences, Einstein introduced a cosmological constant, a “fudge factor,” to yield a static model for the universe. Einstein later considered this to be the greatest blunder of his scientific career. Einstein ultimately gave grudging acceptance to what he called “the necessity for a beginning” and eventually to “the presence of a superior reasoning power.” {But he never did accept the reality of a personal God and was labeled “agnostic”.}
Why such resistance to the idea of a definite beginning of the universe? It goes right back to the cosmological argument: (a) Everything that begins to exist must have a cause; (b) If the universe began to exist, then (c) the universe must have a cause.

You can see the direction in which this argument is flowing–a direction of discomfort to some physicists, agnostics, and atheists.
There currently exist two very popular views, which brings us to concepts very significant metaphysically and philosophically:
If the big bang theory is true: then we can conclude that that which created the universe~ is not the same as the universe itself (a popular view) and that whatever created the universe is not contained within the universe (another popular view).

Stephen Hawking is certainly the most famous physicist in history who has not won the Nobel Prize. This has puzzled people. They automatically assume he has won the Nobel Prize. He has not yet. This is because the Swedish Royal Academy demands that an award-winning discovery must be supported by verifiable experimental or observational evidence. Hawking’s work, to date, remains unproved. The mathematics of his theory, however, are certainly beautiful and elegant. Science is just beginning to verify the existence of black holes, let alone verify “Hawking radiation” or any of his more radical theoretical proposals.

Cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole–it’s structure, origin and development. The questions cosmology addresses are scientifically and theologically profound. Stephen Hawking’s bestseller A Brief History of Time is the most popular book about cosmology ever written and here are some of the questions cosmology seeks to answer:

  1. Is the universe finite or infinite in extent and content?
  2. Is it eternal or does it have a beginning?
  3. Was it created? If not, how did it get here? If so, how was this creation accomplished and what can we learn about the agent and events of creation?
  4. Who or what governs the laws and constants of physics? Are such laws the product of chance or have they been designed? How do they relate to the support and development of life?
  5. Is there any knowable existence beyond the known dimensions of the universe?
  6. Is the universe running down irreversibly or will it bounce back?

Let’s begin with five traditional arguments for the existence of God. It may seem an unlikely starting point for this topic, but I think you’ll see as time goes on that these arguments keep coming up. I’m not going to comment right away on whether these arguments are valid or not, but I will state them because throughout astrophysical literature these arguments are often referred to:

  1. The cosmological argument: the effect of the universe’s existence must have a suitable cause.
  2. The teleological argument: the design of the universe implies an intelligence, purpose, and direction behind it.
  3. The rational argument: the operation of the universe, according to order and natural law, implies a mind behind it.
  4. The ontological argument: man’s ideas of God (his God-consciousness) implies a God who imprinted such a consciousness.
  5. The moral argument: man’s built-in sense of right and wrong can be accounted for only by an innate awareness of a code of law–an awareness implanted by a higher being.

Stephen Hawking has said, in his writings, the actual point of creation lies outside the scope of presently known laws of physics,” and a less well-known but very distinguished cosmologist, Professor Alan Guth from MIT, says “the instant of creation remains unexplained.”

Hugh Ross, an astrophysicist, has written on this topic as well, and he brings us into the philosophical implications. Ross says that, by definition:

Time is that dimension in which cause and effect phenomena take place. . . . If time’s beginning is concurrent with the beginning of the universe, as the space-time theorem says, then:

The cause of the universe must be some entity

operating in a time dimension completely independent of

and pre-existent to the time dimension of the cosmos.

This conclusion is powerfully important to our understanding of who God is and who or what God isn’t. It tells us that the creator is transcendent, operating beyond the dimensional limits of the universe. It tells us that God is not the universe itself, nor is creator contained within the universe.

In conclusion~ there is a quote from a book by a brilliant physicist: Leon Lederman, a Nobel Prize winner. It is called The God Particle:

In the very beginning, there was a void, a curious form of vacuum, a nothingness containing no space, no time, no matter, no light, no sound. Yet the laws of nature were in place and this curious vacuum held potential. A story logically begins at the beginning, but this story is about the universe and unfortunately there are no data for the very beginnings–none, zero. We don’t know anything about the universe until it reaches the mature age of a billion of a trillionth of a second. That is, some very short time after creation in the big bang. When you read or hear anything about the birth of the universe, someone is making it up–we are in the realm of philosophy.

~  Only God knows what happened at the very beginning.

This {*deep sigh*} House Resolution by our “seperation of church and state” government did what?

Wow…. did not know that one.

I presume:
a) it “keeps the peace” between believers and non-believers- giving believers a “tangible” or “pseudo-evidence”
b) it gives “the believing masses” opiate~ people fill with a delusional (xoxox mr. Dawkin’s ;) sense of ease and comfort- (which is not necessarily a bad thing, IS IT? ) and then they stay “compliant” or compromise on other issues. (patriot act for example)
c) it solidifies the matrix for those who wish to live there.

well, if what she says is accurate- real time.. let’s go do us sum fact-checkin’: Let’s go~

Congressional Research Service Summary
The following summary was written by the Congressional Research Service, a well-respected nonpartisan arm of the Library of Congress. GovTrack did not write and has no control over these summaries: 12/11/2007–Passed House amended.
Recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world.
Acknowledges: (1) the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith; and (2) the role of Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization.
Rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians.
Expresses support for and respect to Christians in the United States and throughout the world.

Hm… okay.. so far whadda we think?

WHY do we imagine a government would state the above?
Seems like a “peace-keeping” parents…. or a liberal type of smoothOVER like when someone comes out of the closet over the holidays in front of the family:
“If billy wants to be the gay… then just let it be, Richard… now who wants a second helping of Turkey? Anyone want the last drum stick???”

Acharya’s “fact“? that: “In 2007 the house of Representatives declared December 25th to be the official birthdate of Jesus Christ” unquote is BUSTED though: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hr110-847
What the resolution ACTUALLY declares is: Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;

(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;

(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;

(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;

(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and

(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.

Fill in the words: “Gay, Lesbian, and TransGender” and remove the word “religion” into the above text ~ and I think we would agree it is pretty “warm and fluffy” piece over-all.  {At least for San Franciscians and Seattle liberals =D} I certainly hope that this one statement does not reflect the “thoroughness” of research or ”unbiased” fair&balanced reporting on the rest of Acharya’s other ”facts”.

Acharya has invested more time, energy, and effort into this topic that either of us- or perhaps anyone we know ever will. {*Kudos2her*} Further, Acharya states that much of the tangible evidence that one would make an informed decision either way on the minutia is either: “ancient, in a foreign language, or otherwise {practically} non-researchable to the mere mortal man”. Esoteric personified.  This I do not refute. Also she educates: Just watching stuff or looking up stuff on the internet does not make one an authority, so don’t believe everything you read for free on the internet as “fact”~ see Shopping results for Acharya books:

Some “Motive-Math”: 15million viral hits x 12.5% closing ratio x $16.10 @ Buy.com= *kAching* Thank you!

I conclude that many people focus on what divides and separates perceived conflicts between belief and religions and 3dimensional “reality”.  Some for profit.  Some for private motives.  Some for both.

I hold that we operate in a 3D world when we fully aware that their are 11 [to 26] other dimensions.

People get smug in their confidence of [and vehemently begin arguing over] what is “real” vs. “unreal“. Comparing secular to spiritual, and I find this fascinating. It becomes an intellectual dual to define “reality”.

Debating reality explored:

Could there be life off this planet with Trillions and Trillions of galaxies, holding Billions and Billions *insert Carl’s voice here* and Billions of stars. Seems mathamatically improbably to propose otherwise, doesn’t it? Multiple this above Sagan remark by multiple dimensions and we can almost be assured there IS other intelligence out there.  Agreed?

Combine this with “Nothing comes from absolute nothing“;  Cosmology; and existing theorectical physics and  it solidifies further my belief that Intelligence existed pre-Big Bang (and will post).  There is an important silence between the notes~ there seems atleast a sub-atomic world that we cannot  fully percieve nor comprehend. Agreed?

Faith Based belief (as opposed to faith based religion and religious practices) operates outside of hard traditional evidence.

So, it seems mute to argue that which has exsiting empirical evidence HAS existing empirical evidence.

Conversely as repugnant is stating as 100% factual truth that: “Experiencing love is exactly the same as eating vast quantities of chocolate”.

No.

No it is not. >>> I don’t like chocolate, and they are NOT even close to being represented as similar in my experiential “reality”.

People are arguing these points, at times, in a most vain manner.

* “Ah, vanity….it is my favourite Vice!”  ~ [quote credit: Beelzebub]

Things that hold empirical evidence hold empirical evidence. Things that do not subscribe to empirical evidence (at this time; place) do not.

Dualistic debate done for sport or ?

So, I propose a question for you~ Do you believe in the [NLP] adage that: the mind holds no distinction in what is “REaL” {REALLY real} and that which is Vividly dellusioned? {imaginedly “real”}

Some people believe in ONLY that which they can see with their own eyes~ that nothing exists outside their own personal facts and intellect.   Hm.  See to me?  That takes alot of faith.  To state that something 100% does not exist just because you, personally have not had personal interaction with it, or  because your [personal] convincer strategy remains un~triggered.

Is “happy” a state of mind; that we can enter into without anything outside ourselves? Is that real?

Is “love” real?

Is “good” real?

Is “Jesus” real?

Is “mind” real?

Are “black-holes” and “quarks” and “dark~matter” real?  And if so, where they “real” 100 years ago?

If a tree falls in the forest, and there is no one there to hear it~ does it make a sound, and if so… is the sound it makes “Real”?

Is “my love for my ex-wife” real?

Is “spirit” real?

Could be or absolutely no?

I believe in,

or more accurately- I have proof of: things that have empirical evidence.  It is not even a conversation of “faith-based-belief”~ and I also believe in Intelligence pre-BigBang with my existing evidence~

1. that which tends to prove or disprove something; ground for belief; proof.
2. something that makes plain or clear; an indication or sign

…. just as strongly due to evidence.

This is distinct and diffrent from purely “Faith Based” belief.

Perhaps there is a spoon.

There very well may be no spoon.

?????? [n?m?s?te?] Namasté, Namaskar or Namaskaram

nam-asteNamasté, Namaskar or Namaskaram (Sanskrit: ?????? [n?m?s?te?]

from internal sandhi between nama? and te) is a common spoken greeting or salutation in the Indian subcontinent. Namaskar is considered a slightly more formal version than namasté but both express deep respect. It is commonly used in India and Nepal by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists, and many continue to use this outside the Indian subcontinent. In Indian and Nepali culture, the word is spoken at the beginning of written or verbal communication. However, the same hands folded gesture is made wordlessly upon departure. In yoga, namasté is said to mean “The light in me honors the light in you,” as spoken by both the yoga instructor and yoga students.

Taken literally, it means “I bow to you”. The word is derived from Sanskrit (namas): to bow, obeisance, reverential salutation, and (te): “to you”.[1]

When spoken to another person, it is commonly accompanied by a slight bow made with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards, in front of the chest.

The gesture can also be performed wordlessly and carry the same meaning.

Meanings in global culture:

Namasté is one of the few Sanskrit words commonly recognized by Non-Hindi speakers. In the West, it is often used to indicate South Asian culture in general[citation needed]. Namasté is particularly associated with aspects of South Asian culture such as vegetarianism, yoga, ayurvedic healing, and Hinduism.

In recent times, and more globally, the term “namasté” has come to be especially associated with yoga and spiritual meditation all over the world. In this context, it has been viewed in terms of a multitude of very complicated and poetic meanings which tie in with the spiritual origins of the word. Some examples:

  • “I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me.” — attributed to author Deepak Chopra[3]
  • “I honor the place in you in which the entire Universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of Love, of Integrity, of Wisdom and of Peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are One.”[4][5]
  • “I salute the God within you.”
  • “Your spirit and my spirit are ONE.” — attributed to Lilias Folan’s shared teachings from her journeys to India.[citation needed]
  • “That which is of the Divine in me greets that which is of the Divine in you.”[6]
  • “The Divinity within me perceives and adores the Divinity within you.”[7]
  • “All that is best and highest in me greets/salutes all that is best and highest in you.”
  • “I greet the God within.”

That said, these are all arguably simply attempts at translating the same concept, which does not have a direct parallel in English.

In Buddhism, the concept may be understood as Buddha nature.

The US judicial system is in a sorry state today, the Supreme Court having overturned the damages previously set out in 3 prior rulings for the environmental disaster that the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused back in 1989. Ignoring the fact that it took 19 years and 4 rulings to finally get a dollar amount that Exxon is probably happy to pay, the final amount is creating a lot of anger among environmentalists and those who were directly affected by the spill.
Originally, a federal jury in Alaska set $5 billion in punitive damages back in 1994, but this was later reduced to $4.5 billion, and again to $2.5 billion. The most recent decision bring this amount even further down to $507.5 million, a paltry 10% of the original amount. For those who might defend Exxon, saying that the $5 billion would be financially burdensome, it would be worth noting that the company earned that much in revenue in under 4 days in Q1 of 2007.

The spill of 11 million gallons of oil affected the livelihood of about 32,000 fishermen in Alaska alone, natives, property owners over 1,200 miles of coastline, not to mention the wildlife above and below the waves, the latter of which the Supreme Court gives no value. The court ruled that the punitive damages should only equal the compensatory damages, in other words Exxon must only pay for the costs associated with compensating people for their economic loss sustained by the spill and the costs of the clean up. There are no punitive damages, no penalty for polluting the oceans, killing off “non-economic” wildlife (i.e. anything fishermen don’t catch), or the health and environmental effects that will continue to arise over the years as “unrecoverable” oil slips into the food chain.

Consequences of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

…But $500million probably crippled the company profits and taught them a well deserved Lesson,

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

December 12, 2008 by JAESEN
Filed under global events / national politics

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which follows in this post. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and “to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories.”

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.
